In the press box for Arsenal Women v Wolfsburg Women in the UWCL Semi-final 1st May 2023

Back in February, I hosted a press conference for our Junior Mariner members, where I arranged players from our Men's and Women's Team to come and answer questions from the fans

About Me

Hi, I'm Megan Garbutt, I'm 23 years old and I'm a class of 2023 graduate from the University of Derby's Football Journalism course. I studied Football Journalism between September 2020 and June 2023 and gained valuable experience in the industry during that time.

From reporting on the Lionesses at Wembley and Arsenal Women at the Emirates, to reporting on the WSL on numerous occasions and the Women's Euros in summer 2022, I've created a wide range of content, from detailed match reports, match threads on X (Formerly Twitter), TikTok's, post-match interviews and much more, I've developed a wide skill-set that can be used in various job roles.

From September 2021-May 2023, during my time at University, I lead the Wolves Women media team. I was able to attend matches, providing in-game social medias updates, match reports, post-match interviews and I also conducted player interviews for matchday programmes. This role allowed me to sit in the Moline press box on numerous occasions, as well as the Hawthorns, reporting on two incredibly successful seasons, that both ended in silverware. I was grateful to represent the club at the FA Women's National League Awards on two separate occasions.

During my time at University, I also got to put my writing skills to the test and provided match reports and written interviews from the WSL for a website called WSL Full-time. The photo to the left was a huge opportunity given to me, reporting on Arsenal Women in the Champions League semi-final at the Emirates.

I have a passion for being in front of a camera and talking about football, but I also enjoy providing social media coverage and writing about games as they unfold.

In the summer of 2023, I flew myself out to Australia for the Women's World Cup, where I ended up providing voluntary radio and TV content for various BBC channels.

My first role in the industry was a Media and Communications apprentice at Grimsby Town Football Club I've never liked to think of myself as an apprentice, because my role is full-time, but because we have a media team of two, it's given me so much experience and learning which I wouldn't have got in a bigger team. Just some of my roles have included providing matchday communications for a League Two Club, as well as the Women's and Youth teams, writing articles for the website, becoming the matchday programme editor, conducting a variety of interviews, hosting various events and even being the stadium announcer for a Youth Team game.

My skills have developed tremendously and not only can I still use social media to a high level, I can now use photoshop to a reasonable level, I understand how to structure a variety of website articles, I know how to deal with external media, I can arrange player appearances, I can make editorial decisions for a programme and I can create much more engaging content with an iPhone on a matchday to enhance the social media input.
